Workshop: C125 Feminist strike

Feminist struggles for equality

For several years, trade unions and feminist associations have called for a major feminist strike on International Women's Rights Day. The aim is to demand equal rights and recognition of female-dominated professions. And to demand to be paid the same as men in the workplace.
We want to live in a society free of sexist and sexual violence and have the freedom to dispose of our own bodies!
How can we develop this strike; how can the struggles be brought together?

In recent years, feminist strikes have been successfully organised in several European countries: Spain, Iceland, Poland, Switzerland. They have their own historical context. In Poland, women were opposing a very restrictive law on the right to abortion in a country where this right was already very limited. In Iceland, women were demanding equal pay, while referring to the historic strike of their elders 40 years earlier. A trade unionist and feminist from Switzerland will tell of the long mobilisation to organise the strike on 14 June, what the women have achieved and how the strike was revived.

In many countries around the world, trade unions and feminist associations are calling for a strike on the international day of struggle for women's rights. The aim is to demand equality! Massive strikes in Spain and Argentina, for example, brought together various demands. While the March 8 mobilisations are gaining momentum in France, attempts to strike face difficulties. The collective reflection will focus on the development of the strike, the obstacles encountered, the possible coordination between feminist associations and trade unions, but also at the international level. When will we see a European feminist strike?
